John Mahony & Mick Loughlin

Words: Francis Duggan
Air: ___________________________________________________

When Arkle was a champion his legend still seems to grow
They wore the red Cork jersey some 30 years ago
And before the chaser Red Rum jumped to Aintree renown
John Mahony and Mick Loughlin were the toast of Kanturk town

With the Cork team and Duhallow and with Kanturk they did play
And with the best Gaelic footballers in Ireland they mixed it in their day
But time takes care of everyone and the years only bring grey
And the memories only remain as the decades fade away

In Gaelic football to wear your county’s jersey is the highest accolade
And players grow old and weary long before the memories fade
And to be the best in your parish is in itself quite a feat
Where so many young footballers for to be the best compete

John Mahony and Mick Loughlin were Kanturk’s best in their time
And it must be thirty years or more since they were in their prime
And many changes have occurred and hair has turned to grey
Since they took on the might of Kerry on Munster final day
