By Lovely Dallows Side

Words: Paddy Barrett / Peter O’Neill
Air: ______________________________________________

A song I’ll raise to sing in praise
Of my own native town
A jewel among Sliabh Luachra’s hills
And valleys green and brown
A proud old town that’s built around
Brave deeds and quiet pride
I’ll sing of sweet Áth Treasna
By lovely Dallows side

From Anne’s Bridge down below the town
The Dallow flows serene
Midst gentle hills her water rills
Through lovely woodland scenes
There with rod and gun we sought our fun
And many’s the day enjoyed
With a carefree band of companions grand
By lovely Dallows side

Our hills around are with history bound
Clan Awley’s home was here
Through troubled times and Cromwell’s crimes
That brave Clan showed no fear
O’Sullivan Beare was sheltered there
Though shunned through Ireland wide
When his friends were few they were brave and true
By lovely Dallows side

On Scarteen hill you’ll see there still
Where three brave priests were slain
And across the vale, Newmarket Court
Set in its own Demesne
The Island kiln and old Pound Hill
New Street and High Street wide
There as boys we played in those happy days
By lovely Dallows side
Sweet Sarah sleeps in her quiet place
Where golden sunbeams rest
There too in spirit Emmet lies
In that spot she loved the best
And often midst the after glow
You’ll sense their spirits glide
Together now for evermore
By lovely Dallows side

And now my song draws near its end
But before I go I pray
That those from home in far off lands
May all return some day
May see again that dear old town
Where their hearts are ever tied
There’s an everlasting welcome home
By lovely Dallows side

And for those at home kind friends and true
Good neighbours one and all
May all your days be health and peace
May you rise and never fall
And when life’s journey ends for us
In Clonfert’s clay we’ll abide
And sleep content where our lives were spent
By lovely Dallows side
